American Voices: An American Literature Reader 2 includes a large selection of American literary texts in a variety of genres from the late nineteenth century to the present. Apart from fiction, poetry, and autobiographical writing, three short plays have also been included as well as a large excerpt from Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. The writers whose short fiction has been included are Henry James, Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Stephen Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Eudora Welty, Leslie Marmon Silko, Bharati Mukherjee, and Bapsi Sidhwa. Excerpts have been included from the writings of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Henry Adams, Isaac Bashevis Singer, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Sylvia Plath, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Julia Alvarez. Martin Luther King Jr.s’ “I have a dream” speech and an excerpt from Richard Rodriguez’s memoirs provide different perspectives on the issues of race and ethnicity. Among the poets who have been included are E. A. Robinson, Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot, H. D. (Hilda Doolittle), Marianne Moore, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Archibald Macleish, Robert Lowell, and Allen Ginsberg. Adrienne Rich has been represented by a generous selection of her poems as well as her essay “When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-Vision.” Brief historical accounts have been given for a better understanding of the context of these writings.
Niaz Zaman, professor of English at the University of Dhaka, specializes in American literature. Apart from several articles on American literature, she has also published The Confessional Art of Tennessee Williams (2005). She was president of the Bangladesh Association for American Studies and editor of the Bangladesh Journal of American Studies.
