This Nutrition Sector Review looks at past achievements and current programs, and considers whether enough is being done to ensure that malnutrition will cease to be a major public health issue in Bangladesh, as envisaged in the National Plan of Action for Nutrition. There have been significant gains. Government support for nutrition is substantial, although the focus remains on direct service delivery, rather than on addressing the underlying causes of the problem. An effective programmatic approach (the Bangladesh Integrated Nutrition Project, BINP) has been developed, and eventually will be incorporated into the National Nutrition Program, the first phase of which is due to commence shortly. Major health sector reforms and rationalization of food policies, which support nutrition goals, have also been implemented.
The Review demonstrates that the causes of malnutrition in Bangladesh are indeed multifaceted, and argues that no single sector or program can solve the problem alone. It lays out five current nutrition challenges and proposes actions to tackle them.
