History of the Port of Chittagong is the first of its kind and is basically research oriented, furnishing data and facts useful for further research work. The history covers all about the Port of Chittagong from 1888 to 1947. It tells about the administration, finance, shipbuilding, navigational channel, port facilities, trade and commerce of the Port and backed up by administrative, financial, trade and others statistics in detail. The author says, "The present facilities and the layout of the port would have been different if the responsibilities for planning for it development were given to the Port administration, i, e,. the commissioners for the Port of Chittagong, a statutory body established in 1888 to run and administer the Port under the provisions of the Bengal Act of1887.
The History of the Chittagong Port commissioners in a way is the history of the merchant capital in the context of a colony, and the historical role of a merchant capital imposes the political administrative dimension of social history of Bengal Assam region of British India. Since merchant capital co-exists with a variety of social forms, we find the conflicting interests of the British tea-planters, Chittagonion local traders and Calcuttas Anglo-West Indian Capital. There lies precisely historical significance of the Chittagong Port Commissioners."
