Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971 created waves across the world. Artists all over the globe, driven by a desire to assist the people of Bangladesh and to express sympathy for them, sketched pictures depicting the struggle. There were artistes who made music and the general masses took to the streets in defence of the Bangali struggle for liberation. In various newspapers, periodicals and journals, articles, comments and editorials were written to highlight Bangladesh’s War of Liberation. Cartoons were sketched as a way of focusing on the struggle. All of these recorded documents of history, as it were, have now been collated and collected for publication by Centre for Bangladesh studies, entitled Media and the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The collection begins with a section on cartoons.

During the course of the war, cartoons centering on a number of issues relating to Bangladesh appeared in Britain, Canada, the United States, Belgium, Germany, India and occupied Bangladesh itself. Reaz Ahmed has brought together 345 of these cartoons in this documentation of Bangladesh’s history. Such a publication on the War of Liberation happens to be the first of its kind in Bangladesh.

Reaz Ahmed (born Dhaka, 1964) has compiled and edited this anthology, did his post-graduation in Management from Dhaka University in 1986. He was a Lecturer at Rajshahi Government City College and Dhaka Government Kabi Nazrul College. At present he is associated with The Institute of Liberation, Bangabandhu and Bangladesh Studies of National University.

Commenting on the cartoons in this anthology, writer and art critic Burhanuddin Khan Jahangir writes: “It is inevitable that the militaristic state will collapse before the unarmed masses of people. It is this view which artists have expressed in their divergent ways.” Playwright and art critic Sayeed Ahmad has this to say: “For the people of Bangladesh, this compilation is a huge treasure trove of information.”

Noted writer and historian, Professor Muntassir Mamoon, is the editor of the series Media and the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
