Published for students in American Literature programs at Bangladesh universities, this anthology includes a large selection of American literary texts in a variety of genres from the earliest writings in America to the Civil War. Early writers included are John Smith, Thomas Morton, William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Edward Taylor. Selections from the writings of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and St Jean de Crevecoeur among others reflect the intellectual and political ferment of the revolutionary period. Nineteenth-century writers included in the volume are Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allen Poe, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Herman Melville. A selection of speeches by Native Americans and excerpts from the autobiographies of Linda Brent (Harriet A. Jacobs) and Frederick Douglass provide a perspective on the issues of race relations and slavery in the nineteenth century. Brief historical accounts have been included as well as pictures of writers, places, documents, monuments, and events to provide a visual context.

Niaz Zaman, professor of English at the University of Dhaka, specializes in American literature. Apart from several articles on American literature, she has also published The Confessional Art of Tennessee Williams (2005). She was president of the Bangladesh Association for American Studies and editor of the Bangladesh Journal of American Studies.
